Sprott Shaw College is pleased to announce that the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program has been enhanced with Indigenous components. As of March 2026, these changes have officially been implemented across the in-person and online platforms of the Early Childhood Education program.
Sprott Shaw College Early Childhood Education Program
Sprott Shaw College’s Early Childhood Education program qualifies graduates to work in early learning settings with children aged three to five years old. Through the curriculum, students gain a broad range of skills needed to plan and implement age and developmentally appropriate activities that foster children’s holistic development.
The Early Childhood Education program is delivered online and in person through multiple Sprott Shaw College campuses in British Columbia.
This program has been enhanced to reflect a distinctions-based approach that respectfully recognizes the unique identities, cultures, and perspectives of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples of Canada. The program and all courses commence with a welcome video featuring Indigenous Knowledge Keeper, Tsitsáyxemaat (Rebecca Duncan), from Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation).
The Early Childhood Education program introduces the diverse music, languages, and storytelling traditions of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples, grounded in deep connections to land and reflecting distinct ways of knowing, being and relating within community.
The Indigenization of the Early Childhood Education program is one of the ways Sprott Shaw College has upheld its dedication to reconciliation. The new components of the Early Childhood Education Program align with the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action #12 and #63iii, as outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
Sprott Shaw College’s Early Childhood Education program continuously involves First Nations and Metis Educators in the decision-making related to the program development and implementation.
The Early Childhood Education program enhancements have been approved by the Private Training Institution Regulatory Unit (PTIRU), and it has been endorsed by the ECE Registry from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.
