Success Story: Kayla Butler (Jokinen), Early Childhood Education Basic

What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?

I had just moved back to Kamloops from Alberta due to COVID and decided to prioritize obtaining my ECE certificate after being in the field for eight years.

Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?

Sprott Shaw was one of only two in‑person options available locally for my ECE program. Because the days were longer, I was able to become certified much faster than at other institutions, where it would have taken twice the time to graduate.

How was the admissions process?

Admissions was an easy process. Our admissions advisor, Peter Moore, is amazing and is still the campus administrator today. He answers questions quickly and is incredibly supportive, especially when it comes to something as confusing as student loans.

What program did you choose and why?

I chose my ECE basic as I’d been in the field for many years. I knew it was the career for me and it was time to get certified so I could be paid what I deserved.

What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?

The program was accommodated as best as possible during the COVID period, with half of the coursework delivered online and half on campus. My instructor was helpful and knowledgeable, and my peers were amazing. Some of them are still my best friends to this day and even walked down the aisle at my wedding.

Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?

One practicum took place at a facility where I was already employed, as it occurred during the COVID period. Another practicum was completed at a facility called Colour My World. I learned so much during this experience, and my practicum host was amazing. I remain in contact with the staff and have maintained strong professional relationships to this day.

How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?

I already had employment at a facility and worked there every day after school, so I did not go through a job-hunting process..

Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?

As of 2025, I am the ECE instructor at our Kamloops Sprott Shaw campus. I support students in every way I can and prepare them for the field with high expectations.

If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?

Come prepared to work! Courses are heavy with lots of information, so make sure you are at a point in your life that you can really focus and commit to school so you can be successful in your studies.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

It’s so exciting to be in a position that is so valuable to my field I am so passionate about. I have the ability to sympathize with students, I know how hard they work to become quality ECE’s as I have taken the same program that I am now instructing.
