
What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?
I was working a part-time job as a greeter at Bevan Village, a private care facility in Abbotsford. My duties included manually opening the door for people coming and going, ensuring they signed in and out, and making sure everyone stayed healthy by enforcing COVID-19 protocols.
Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?
Sprott Shaw was the only College that looked past my hearing disability and gave me the opportunity of a lifetime.
How was the admissions process?
The admission process was simple, easy, and straightforward. The staff were very friendly, polite and efficient at responding to any and all of my questions.
What program did you choose and why?
I joined the Health Career Access Program because I wanted to become a health care assistant and help seniors live their best lives. Now, as a fully qualified health care assistant, I am truly grateful for the insightful education I received from Sprott Shaw College. To me, this is one of the most meaningful jobs that could ever exist. I am genuinely happy to do this work, and I always smile when seniors share their stories.
What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?
During my time at Sprott Shaw College, the environment was both friendly and professional. I was impressed by how efficiently the college was run. I’ve heard many people say unkind things about Sprott Shaw College; however, I always challenge that way of thinking because the staff, teachers, and classmates I encountered were all supportive and genuinely wanted everyone to succeed in their education.
Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?
My practicum was at Jackman Manor in Aldergrove, and I had a great experience there. My time there was truly special, and it gave me valuable insight into what the job truly entails. My instructor, Louie Tapia, was the absolute best, knowledgeable, kind, straightforward, and appropriately strict. I have nothing but the greatest respect for him; he is one of the best teachers I have ever had, alongside Desiree Maday.
How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?
I was hired back at Langley Memorial Hospital to work as a Health Care Support Worker. After a one month process I was then legally registered as a Health Care Assistant and was immediately hired.
Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?
I have been working at Langley Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Facilities since February 2025 as a health care assistant, helping seniors live their best lives.
If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?
Ask as many questions as possible, regardless of how big or small they might be, Sprott Shaw College is great at replying to every single question you could possibly ask.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Sprott Shaw College looked past my Hard of Hearing disability and gave me the education that led to a job of a lifetime, one that I am genuinely happy in and truly enjoy. Not many people these days can say the same, so I feel truly blessed and forever thankful to the college.
