Student Spotlight: Laura Chiu’s Journey to Becoming a Primary Care Paramedic

Written on 01/05/2026

Meet Laura Chiu, a dedicated student at our Vancouver campus who is currently enrolled in the Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) program. Driven by a desire to serve her community and build valuable hands‑on skills, Laura chose the paramedic path to make a meaningful impact in emergency healthcare.

With over 121 years of history, Sprott Shaw College has been shaping medical professionals across fields such as nursing, health care assistance, and emergency services. Laura shared that one of the standout features of the PCP program is its ongoing practicum opportunities, offered not just at the end of the course but integrated throughout the entire program. This ensures students gain real‑world experience from day one.

Laura has appreciated learning from a diverse team of instructors, ranging from PCPs to Advanced Care Paramedics, each bringing their own industry knowledge and frontline experience. She especially enjoys the hands‑on lab work, supported by a fully equipped facility that includes an ambulance bay, advanced heart monitors, and the latest training mannequins.

As she progresses through the program, Laura feels confident that she’ll be well‑prepared to become a fully licensed paramedic, ready to serve and make a difference in the field.
