What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?
I was a professional painter. I used to paint condos, apartments, and houses. I moved here from Winnipeg, MB.
Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?
I heard good things about the College. I live in Mission, BC, and attending Sprott Shaw College was close for me.
What program did you choose and why?
I entered the HCAP program through Work BC, which helped me clarify my career goals. After researching the program, I felt it would be a good fit for me, as I enjoy working with the elderly.
What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?
I liked my instructor; I haven’t been in school in 10 years, and she taught me to have a better understanding. She made it easier to understand what I was learning.
Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?
It was good. I learned there is so much to being a care aide. We are the investigators; we are the ones who notice any changes in behaviors, skin, and mood. We do a lot as healthcare assistants.
How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?
I’m part of the HCAP program through Fraser Health, so I owe a year of service, and I am currently working casually.
Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?
I work at the Resident of Mission. My duties are taking care of the elderly. I give them the care that they need.
If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?
It’s a good school to go to. The instructors are amazing. I discovered many things that I hadn’t realized I needed to learn.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I made a lot of new friends. You’re never too old to go back to school.
