What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?

I was studying to become a health care assistant but went on leave after having a baby. Once my maternity leave ended, I realized that career path wasn’t for me and decided to try something new!

Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?

A friend referred me and shared how welcoming and close-knit the staff is — and I can wholeheartedly agree!

How was the admissions process?

The process was super easy and fast! Tammy was amazing — so helpful with all my questions, and she made sure I understood everything and had it all done quickly and perfectly. I also love the flexible start dates, which made it easy for me to begin my program as soon as possible!

What program did you choose and why?

I’ve always had a huge passion for children. As the oldest of five siblings and now a mom to two little ones, a 2-year-old and a 2-month-old, caring for kids has always been a big part of my life. But it was becoming a mom to my daughter that truly confirmed my desire to work with children. She’s taught me so much and inspired me in ways I never expected.

What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?

Amazing! It’s such an open, welcoming, and supportive environment; it truly feels like home and family. I’m usually a really shy person, but being here helped me build incredible connections and friendships. I’ve discovered a side of myself I didn’t even know existed!

Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?

I completed three practicums during my program. My first was at Little Bloomers in Rutland, which I absolutely loved! I learned so much there, and the staff were incredibly supportive and actively involved in the center.

My second placement was at Creative Advantage, where I had a lot of freedom to apply my skills. I really enjoyed the layout and routine of the center and I was even offered a position afterward!

My final practicum was with the YMCA at Little Scholars, and it ended up being one of my favorites. I loved exploring the preschool room and built a great friendship with one of the educators after my program ended. It was the most supportive environment for me. I was pushed outside my comfort zone and got to try so many new things!

How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?

I was hired 2 days after finishing my program, leading my classroom at Kelowna Kids Co!

Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?

I’m currently on maternity leave, but after finishing my practicum in December, I started working full-time right away at Kelowna Kids Co, and I absolutely loved it! I had my classroom with eight children, and the environment gave me a lot of freedom to run things in a way that worked best for both me and the kids.

The center had beautiful materials, a great playground, and was just a short walk from the beach and nearby parks, which made outdoor time extra special. The staff were incredibly supportive and welcoming. I was genuinely sad to leave for my maternity leave, but I definitely plan to return!

If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?

Enjoy every moment!! It goes by fast, so soak it in and enjoy it! Make friends and be yourself!! I would do anything to spend 1 day again in class laughing and smiling with all the people in my class and my instructor.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Carla is an amazing instructor with over 40 years of experience in this field, and it truly shows. Her passion and care for what she does are undeniable. She takes the time to get to know every student personally, appreciating and supporting each of us for who we are.

Carla believes in you even when you don’t believe in yourself. She pushes you to grow, to step outside your comfort zone, and to become the best version of yourself. I’m so incredibly thankful for her. I wouldn’t have finished my program, or become the person I am today, without her guidance and support. I truly can’t thank her enough.
