May is Child Care Month in British Columbia, and as a member of Early Childhood Educators of British Columbia (ECEBC) and a sponsor of this year’s ECEBC Conference in Richmond and Kamloops, Sprott Shaw College would like to celebrate the hardworking Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) that look after and mentor our little ones!
Not only are ECEs entrusted with the care of children, but they also use their training to foster children’s social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and literacy development during a very formative time in their lives. By spending time and interacting with ECEs, children learn how to better understand and manage their emotions, communicate with others, and build healthy connections. Through their dedication to caring for children, ECEs allow parents to pursue career and education opportunities while also balancing family life. We deeply appreciate and admire the role ECEs play in supporting families and helping children grow.
The Growing Demand for ECEs
There’s no better time than now to begin a career in Early Childhood Education. ECEs play a vital role in their communities and economies, and they experience an impactful and fulfilling career shaping the next generation. Moreover, there is a high demand for ECEs across BC, with almost 600 new childcare spaces opening in the latter half of 2024 alone. As a federally supported industry, the government is expected to invest $3.2 billion over the next five years, which would result in the development of 30,000 new regulated childcare spaces across Canada. With over 120 years in operation and campuses across BC, Sprott Shaw College is ready to help meet this demand.

Our ECE Programs
Sprott Shaw’s Early Childhood Education programs equip students with the knowledge, experience, and confidence to prepare them for entering this in-demand field. Our students learn about different influences on development, methods of observational recording, how to implement program plans, and much more. In addition to the contemporary and thorough program courses, the curriculum includes a practicum placement, in which students gain real-life work experience in a licensed childcare center. Our ECE Basic program is available online to everyone in British Columbia, providing a flexible option for individuals looking to pursue schooling while balancing other responsibilities.
Owner of Sweet Pumpkins Daycare and former Sprott Shaw student Ritisha Khimani shared her experience in our ECE program, “The support from tutors and staff was exceptional, fostering a conducive learning environment. The program equipped me with invaluable knowledge in Early Childhood Education, crucial for realizing my dream of starting my own daycare. As a newcomer to British Columbia and Canada, navigating the intricacies of starting a business was daunting, but Sprott Shaw provided unwavering guidance from day one. The quality care program I developed, rooted in the knowledge acquired during my studies, has earned the trust and appreciation of parents. Sprott Shaw’s support extended beyond graduation, reflecting their commitment to student success. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunities afforded to me and hope others can benefit from similar support to realize their aspirations.”
