What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?
I was studying to become a Licensed Practical Nurse at a different college, and previously worked as a Self Checkout Attendee.
Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?
I took a program that led me to choose Sprott Shaw. I also learned that the college has a strong reputation for its programs and long history.
How was the admissions process?
Very quick and easy.
What program did you choose and why?
Health Care Assistant β PP. I chose this program because of my interest in the healthcare field and my desire to assist people who are in need. Also, taking this program would help me become more well-educated as I continue my studies in becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse.
What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?
The environment was clean and peaceful and the equipment is easy to work with.
Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?
My practicum was held at Oakwood Manor. It was a great experience. The health care assistants helped me learn some tips and tricks to organize my supplies.
How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?
About a week.
Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?
I work at The Summit by Quadra Village. It is long-term care, so I assist with the daily lives of residents. Depending on each resident, I would propel them from one place to another, assist with feeding, showering, and dressing.
If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?
My advice to someone considering studying at Sprott Shaw is: βIn moments when you might struggle with your coursework or feel stressed about exams, talk to your classmates for advice and stay after class to ask your instructors questions. The more questions you ask, the easier it becomes as you progress through the program.β
Is there anything else you would like to share?
When I first started studying at Sprott Shaw, I was filled with wonder and determination to work hard in each subject I encountered. Although there were moments of self-doubt about whether I would pass certain classes, my family, loved ones, and classmates made my experience increasingly better.
My perseverance and desire to succeed helped me improve over time, along with the support of my instructors. For instance, I would stay after class to perfect each lesson, especially the practical skills that would later be used in physical exams. Since it takes me longer to memorize what is taught in class, I often ask my classmates for tips and strategies.
With patience and a positive outlook, I eventually graduated, smiling and ready to face the rest of the world.
