What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?

Before coming to Sprott Shaw College, I was actively involved in my community through volunteer work, particularly with children’s programs and youth initiatives. While these experiences solidified my passion for working with young learners, I realized I needed a strong, professional foundation to turn that passion into a fulfilling career. I was looking for a program that would provide hands-on training and had recognized credentials, and that’s exactly what I found here.

Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?

I chose Sprott Shaw College for several key reasons. Firstly, their Early Childhood Education program stood out to me because of its comprehensive curriculum and the emphasis on practical, real-world skills. I also heard great things about the supportive learning environment and the dedicated instructors. Knowing that they have a strong track record of graduates finding employment quickly in the field was a huge factor, and the convenient campus location in Kamloops was a bonus.

How was the admissions process?

The admissions process was incredibly smooth and straightforward. The admissions team was helpful and knowledgeable, guiding me through each step and answering my questions promptly. They made the program requirements and application process easy to understand, which significantly reduced any stress. Overall, it was a welcoming and efficient experience from start to finish.

What program did you choose and why?

I chose the Early Childhood Education program. My decision was driven by a deep-seated passion for working with children and contributing to their foundational development. I believe that providing a nurturing and stimulating environment in a child’s early years is crucial for their future success. I specifically chose Sprott Shaw’s ECE program because of its reputation for comprehensive training, its focus on practical application, and the high employment rate of its graduates in the field. I wanted to be equipped with the best possible skills to make a real difference in the lives of young children, and this program delivers that.

What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?

The environment at Sprott Shaw College has been incredibly nurturing and supportive. The instructors are experienced professionals who genuinely care about our success. The class sizes are ideal, allowing for personalized attention and meaningful interactions with both instructors and fellow students. It feels like a close-knit community where everyone is encouraged to learn, grow, and support one another. It truly fosters an environment where you feel confident to ask questions and explore new ideas.

Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?

My practicum experience is just about to begin – it starts this coming Monday! I’m incredibly excited to apply everything I’ve learned in the Early Childhood Education program. I’m fortunate to have placements across three different daycares over the practicum period, which will run until August 29th. I believe this will provide me with a broad range of experiences and exposure to various childcare settings. The opportunity to gain hands-on experience with different age groups and program philosophies is invaluable, and I’m really looking forward to the practical application of my skills and the insights I’ll gain from working alongside experienced educators. Sprott Shaw’s support in arranging these diverse placements has been fantastic, and I feel well-prepared for this exciting next step.

Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?

Currently, I am fully immersed in my Early Childhood Education program at Sprott Shaw College. Through my coursework and upcoming practicum, I am developing the essential skills and knowledge required to work with children from infancy through school age. My future duties will encompass creating engaging and developmentally appropriate learning environments, designing and implementing educational activities, fostering children’s social-emotional growth, and collaborating with families to support each child’s unique needs. I’m excited to put all of this into practice when I graduate!

If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?

My advice would be to fully immerse yourself in the experience. Ask questions, engage with your instructors and classmates, and embrace every learning opportunity, especially during your practicum. The instructors are a wealth of knowledge and genuinely want to see you succeed. Be prepared to work hard, but know that the support system at Sprott Shaw is incredible. Most importantly, embrace your passion for your chosen field, and let that drive you through your studies. It’s an investment in your future that is absolutely worth it.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I just want to reiterate how grateful I am for the education I’m receiving at Sprott Shaw College. As someone who will be graduating next year from the Early Childhood Education program, I feel incredibly well-prepared and confident about my future career. The skills I’m gaining are practical and directly applicable to the field, and the support from the college has been outstanding. I’m truly excited to be a Sprott Shaw alumna and to contribute to the important field of early childhood education. I’m eagerly looking forward to participating in next year’s graduation ceremony!
