What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?
Before I attended SSC, I was working two jobs as a joinery worker and a bartender. I knew I wanted to go back to college because my mom became sick, and I was interested in learning how to take care of her.
Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?
I chose Sprott Shaw College because they offered the HCAP program, and many hospital employees that I spoke to graduated from Sprott Shaw.
How was the admissions process?
The admission process was fast, but I received lots of guidance on exactly what was needed from me, and the advisor took care of mostly everything.
What program did you choose and why?
I chose HCA because it opens doors to many different allied health programs, and I understood that HCAs spend most of their time at the bedside when working in health care. I wanted to learn how to take care of my mom, and most of my friends suggested that I take HCA.
What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?
My instructor made every day in class worth being there, even during my worst days. Debra Hole inspired me and taught me how to provide the best quality of care to patients, and she made every lab simulation feel applicable to what the real world would be like.
Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?
My practicum was at Heritage in Chiliwack and Menno in Abbotsford. Both facilities were challenging but planted expectations to what working health care would ask of me.
How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?
I found two jobs immediately and worked both for about 2 years but stayed at one to current date. One being a mental health and substance use facility, and my current job at the Abbotsford Hospital.
Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?
I work at Abbotsford Hospital in the medical, surgical, and emergency units. Each unit has different responsibilities, but I practice within my scope of practice under the direction of the nurse and according to the care plan provided for each patient. I mainly provide patient care and assistance to the nurse I am working alongside, as well as to the physician.
If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?
Appreciate the advice that the instructor is providing as the lessons will follow you everyday.
