What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?
Before attending Sprott Shaw, I was a stay-at-home parent.
Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?
Sprott Shaw has always been on my mind ever since I first tried to pursue my education over 15 years ago. I felt that the small class sizes would allow me to get the most out of my education rather than feeling lost in the large university system.
How was the admissions process?
The admissions process was amazing! I had no idea about all the resources available to students. Peter Moore from Sprott Shaw made the entire experience smooth and supportive, helping me find solutions regardless of any barriers I faced.
What program did you choose and why?
I chose the Community Support Worker program taught by Kayla Laird. She was absolutely amazing as an instructor, and I don’t think I could have achieved my success without her. After not having formal education for over 20 years and only completing Grade 10, I was deeply frightened, but that fear quickly faded thanks to Kayla’s patient, compassionate, and encouraging teaching style. I’m truly thankful for her ability to help her students rise to their full potential! I started the program as a former child in care who faced many obstacles growing up. Every pain and hardship I experienced has given me the ability to truly understand others and empathize with their struggles. By following this career path, I’ve chosen to help those who are where I once was to offer hope, guidance, and support to those who need it most.
What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?
Although most of my education was online, every time I attended the Kamloops campus it was a pleasant experience. The staff were always friendly and welcoming, and it felt more like visiting family than going to college.
Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?
I am just about to begin my practicum, and I’m excited to have a placement that aligns perfectly with my goals.
How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?
I’m confident I won’t have any issues finding employment. Sprott Shaw is well-accredited and recognized for its strong educational approach and support.
Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?
I’m currently awaiting my practicum placement, but I’m enthusiastic and motivated about my future position in the field.
If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?
Communication is key! If you ever have concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification or direction. The staff at Sprott Shaw truly walks beside you toward your goals. My experience has been incredible, and I would recommend Sprott Shaw to anyone seeking a thorough and supportive education.
