What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?

Before enrolling at Sprott Shaw College, I worked as a receptionist in a healthcare setting. In this role, I was responsible for a wide range of administrative tasks, including greeting patients and visitors, answering phone calls, scheduling appointments, and managing patient records. I also provided clerical support to various departments and ensured smooth and efficient communication between staff, patients, and healthcare providers.

This experience allowed me to develop strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills, which proved extremely valuable as I transitioned into my studies at Sprott Shaw. It also gave me a deeper understanding of the importance of professionalism and patient-centered care, inspiring me to pursue further education in the healthcare field. Working as a receptionist gave me a solid foundation and helped me realize my passion for working in a medical environment, ultimately leading me to pursue a more specialized role through my training at Sprott Shaw College.

The admission process was smooth and easy to navigate. I found all the information I needed online and was able to complete the application independently without any issues. The steps were clearly outlined, making it simple to submit the required documents and get registered.

What I appreciated most was how efficient and organized the entire process was, from applying to receiving my acceptance. It made the experience stress-free and allowed me to focus on preparing for my studies. Overall, the process was straightforward, and I felt confident every step of the way.

What program did you choose and why?

I chose the Medical Unit Clerk (MUC) program because I wanted to build on my existing experience in the healthcare field and take the next step in my career. Having previously worked as a receptionist, I developed valuable administrative skills and gained firsthand insight into how healthcare teams operate. However, I was eager to advance my role and take on more specialized and meaningful responsibilities within a medical environment.

The MUC program offered the perfect opportunity to expand my knowledge in areas such as medical terminology, patient charting, order entry, and hospital communication systems. I was especially drawn to the program’s focus on preparing students for work in hospitals and care facilities, settings I’ve always been passionate about. I wanted to not only enhance my qualifications but also build the confidence and competence needed to work effectively alongside nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals.

Choosing this program was a strategic decision to grow professionally, open up better job opportunities, and contribute more meaningfully in a healthcare setting.

What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?

My time at Sprott Shaw College was a very positive and rewarding experience. The learning environment was supportive, inclusive, and focused on student success. The instructors were knowledgeable, approachable, and always willing to help, whether during class, after hours, or through additional support when needed. Their real-world experience helped connect the course material to actual workplace situations, making the learning process more meaningful.

The small class sizes allowed for more one-on-one interaction, and I appreciated the opportunity to build strong connections with both instructors and classmates. Everyone was respectful and motivated, which created an encouraging and professional classroom atmosphere.

Overall, my experience at Sprott Shaw gave me the confidence and skills I needed to pursue my career goals. It was a focused, career-driven environment where I felt seen, supported, and well-prepared for the next chapter in my professional journey.

Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?

My practicum experience was incredibly valuable and gave me the opportunity to apply everything I had learned in the classroom to a real healthcare setting. I was placed in a busy and professional unit, where I observed and participated in the daily responsibilities of a Medical Unit Clerk. From processing doctors’ orders to communicating with nurses and managing patient charts, I gained hands-on experience that significantly boosted both my confidence and skill set.

The staff at my practicum site were supportive and welcoming. They took the time to guide me, answer my questions, and help me feel like a valued member of the team. It was a fast-paced environment, but I appreciated the challenge; it pushed me to stay organized, focused, and professional.

Overall, my practicum helped bridge the gap between theory and practice and confirmed that I had made the right decision in pursuing this career path. It gave me real-world insight into the role and prepared me for the responsibilities I will take on in the workplace.
