Meet Sprott Shaw’s 2025 Lower Mainland Valedictorians

We are proud to introduce our Lower Mainland valedictorians who graduated last week from our East Vancouver, Burnaby (Trades), New Westminster, Downtown Vancouver, and Richmond campuses, marking the end of one fulfilling chapter and the start of an exciting new one. Their graduation ceremonies are the culmination of months of hard work, dedication, and growth. We are immensely proud of them and honoured to have them represent Sprott Shaw College. Congratulations Class of 2025 – you did it!

East Vancouver Valedictorian: Katrina Lee Petryk – Practical Nursing

Katrina Lee Petryk, our valedictorian representing the East Vancouver campus, thanked the Sprott Shaw instructors who shaped her cohort into the compassionate and strong nurses they are today. She also reflected on the resilience and growth that fueled the success of the Practical Nursing graduates.  

“So, as we go forward, remember — we’re not just graduating with knowledge, we’re graduating with purpose. Let’s lead with empathy, speak up for those who can’t, and be the nurses who make people feel safe, seen, and cared for.”

Burnaby Valedictorian: Seamus Reilly – Electrician Common Core – Level 2

Seamus Reilly, our valedictorian representing the Trades (Burnaby) campus, thanked his loved ones and his instructor for their support. He also encouraged his fellow graduates to keep up the determination that fueled them during their education as they explore whatever comes next.  

“[As] I stand here today, I’m reminded that this moment isn’t just about grades or titles, it’s about growth. It’s about showing up, pushing through the hard days, and finding something that truly matters to you.”

New Westminster Valedictorian: Mihaela Luchian-Cretu – Health Care Assistant

Mihaela Luchian-Cretu, our valedictorian representing the New Westminster campus, reflected on the challenges, support, and success that shaped her journey to graduation. She also shared her gratitude for her family, friends, and Sprott Shaw staff who encouraged her along the way.

“Class of 2025, today is not just an end but a beginning. Let us carry the spirit of optimism and hard work into our next adventures. We have many adventures ahead of us!”

Downtown Vancouver Valedictorian: Katrina Capati – Practical Nursing

Katrina Capati, our valedictorian representing the Downtown Vancouver campus, expressed her deep gratitude for the instructors, classmates, and loved ones that motivated her throughout her education journey. She also reflected on the skills and resilience of the Practical Nursing graduates, and the positive impact they will make on patients’ lives.

“As we move forward, I have no doubt that we are all ready for the challenges and rewards that lie ahead. We’ve learned not only about clinical skills but also about what it means to be compassionate nurses.”

Richmond Valedictorian: Shiela Mae Balacuit – Early Childhood Education

Shiela Mae Balacuit, our valedictorian representing the Richmond campus shared a heartfelt speech dedicated to her fellow Early Childhood Education graduates. She praised their hard work and encouraged them to not lose sight of the positive impact they can have on the lives of children.

“As we embark on this next journey, let us remember our motivation why we chose Early Childhood Education in the first place; to make a difference. To leave a lasting impact on the children’s lives who will one day lead our world. We are not just teachers, we are changemakers, innovators, and builders of dreams.”
