What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?
Before attending Sprott Shaw College, I had been working in the education field in China for over 20 years. I have always been passionate about working with children and supporting their growth and development. After moving to Canada, I wanted to continue in this field, but I knew I needed to upgrade my knowledge and gain local qualifications in early childhood education. That’s what led me to Sprott Shaw College.
Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?
I chose Sprott Shaw College because of its strong reputation, flexible class schedule, and the practical focus of its Early Childhood Education program. As a full-time mom accompanying my child to study in Canada, I wanted to use this time meaningfully by continuing my professional development. I have always been passionate about working with children, and Sprott Shaw provided the perfect opportunity to pursue my interest in early childhood education while balancing family life. The supportive instructors and hands-on practicum made my learning experience both inspiring and fulfilling.
How was the admissions process?
The admissions process at Sprott Shaw College was smooth and supportive. I was initially quite nervous as someone who hadn’t been in school for nearly 20 years. However, the admissions team was incredibly patient and helpful they answered all my questions clearly and guided me through each step, from choosing the right program to submitting my documents. Their encouragement gave me the confidence to take this important step in my life
What program did you choose and why?
I chose the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program because I have always loved working with young children and strongly believe in the importance of early learning. Before coming to Canada, I had over 20 years of experience in the education field in China. I wanted to continue on this path and gain the knowledge, skills, and certification needed to work in Canadian childcare settings. The ECE program at Sprott Shaw allowed me to build on my experience while learning the best practices used in Canada.
What was the atmosphere like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?
The environment at Sprott Shaw College was warm, supportive, and inspiring. As someone returning to school after many years, especially with English as my second language, I was nervous at first. However, from the very beginning, I felt welcomed and respected. My instructors were patient, kind, and always willing to help. My classmates were friendly and supportive, and we learned from each other throughout the program. It truly felt like a community where everyone wanted to see one another succeed.
Where was your practicum or co-op, and how was it?
I completed 400 hours of practicum at three different childcare centers: Trinity Baptist Day Care, Musqueam Day Care, and CEFA Early Learning Vancouver Commercial Drive, working primarily with children aged 3 to 5.
Each placement gave me a unique perspective and helped me grow as an early childhood educator. I had the opportunity to apply what I learned in class to real-life situations—supporting children’s emotional, social, and cognitive development, observing classroom routines, and creating developmentally appropriate activities.
All three centers had supportive educators who guided me with kindness and professionalism. My final placement at CEFA was especially inspiring, as their educational philosophy aligned closely with my own values and teaching style. These practicum experiences confirmed that I am on the right career path.
How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?
I was very fortunate, I received an on-call job offer from a well-known childcare chain on the same day I graduated. It was incredibly rewarding to see my hard work pay off so quickly. I believe that my practicum experience, strong academic performance, and the support from my instructors gave me the confidence and preparation I needed for the job market. This opportunity marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life, and I’m truly excited to continue growing in this field.
Where do you work? Can you explain your duties?
I haven’t officially started working yet, but I’ve already received an offer, and I am in the process of completing the onboarding paperwork. The position is an on-call educator role at a well-known childcare center, and I’m very excited to begin this new journey soon. Based on the job description, my responsibilities will include supporting daily classroom routines, engaging with children during activities, and helping create a safe and nurturing learning environment. I look forward to applying what I’ve learned and continuing to grow in this field.
If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?
My advice is this: don’t be afraid, even if you’ve been away from school for years or English is your second language, you can do it. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed and even wanted to give up, especially in the beginning. But with the support of my instructors, classmates, and my determination, I made it through with perfect attendance and top grades. Ask questions, be open to learning, and trust the process. The journey may not be easy, but it’s worth it. If I can do it, so can you!
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Yes, I just want to say thank you. Thank you to Sprott Shaw College for giving me the chance to start over, grow, and believe in myself again. As a mom who came to Canada to support her child, I never expected that I would also find a new path for myself. This journey reminded me that it’s never too late to learn and that, with the right support, anything is possible. I will always carry this experience in my heart.
